-Have you ever had something in your life that you always look forward to, some may say it is your own American Dream. Most people do have their own American dream to keep them happy. Whether it is extremely important in their life, or it is just a little something to get their mind off of things. The characters often talk about their dreams so they can stay happy. And in Of Mice and Men, and everyone has their own American dream to stay happy.
-Curley's wife wanted to be in the movies, so she could escape her life with Curley. Ever since she was a little girl, she tried to get people to know her. Curley's wife mentions how she met this actor in one of the shoes that went through, ". . . I met one of the actors. He says I could go with that show. But my ol' lady wouldn' let me. She says because I was on'y fifteen. But the guy says I coulda. If I'd went, I wouldn't be livin' like this, you bet." (Steinbeck 88). Her parents never cared for her being in the pictures, so once she figured that her parents got rid of the letter she was going to get, so she gave up and married curley. She never told anyone about how she really felt about Curley, except for Lennie. So she went on, "Well, I ain't told this to nobody befor. Maybe I ought'n to. I don't like Curley. He ain't a nice fella." (Steinbeck 89). She is depressed because she never gets to talk to anyone anymore, she says that Curley owns her.
-Candy wanted to get off that farm, and go with George and Lennie. He did not want to stay there on the farm any longer, because he thought he was useless. Once his dog died, he did not want to go like his dog did, and he did not want to get kicked off the farm for being useless. He also regrets letting Carlson shoot his dog, he says that he should have done it, but unhappily he thought "No," he said softly. "No, I couldn' do that. I had 'im too long." (Steinbeck 45). Candy overheard George and Lennie talking about their dream, so Candy quickly replied saying he wanted to join them. Then later Lennie gets into trouble, and Candy was scared about what might happen, and Candy spoke said, "You an' me can get that little place, can't we, George? You an' me can go there an' live nice, can't we, George? Cant we? (Steinbeck 94). Candy had no idea what to think anymore.
-George and Lennie's dream was to have a house and land. Throughout the book they are always talking about their American Dream, because they go through a lot of rough patches. Lennie said softly, "We could live offa the fatta the lan'." (Steinbeck 57). George wants to get this land so Lennie does not get into any more trouble. And all Lennie wants is to tend the rabbits. Lennie breathed hard. “You jus’ let ‘em try to get the rabbits. I’ll break their God damn necks. I’ll . . . I’ll smash ‘em with a stick (Steinbeck 58). George and Lennie start to think that it will come true once Candy helps them out, but like usual Lennie messes up. George remembers how Candy wishes he would have killed his dog, so George could not let anyone else kill him, so George killed him peacefully.
-So once again, American Dreams are a very important thing in the story Of Mice and Men. Sometimes though when you believe it will come true you might end up getting disappointed in the end. So it is important to have an American dream, but make it something that is just out of your reach, so it makes you work for it. George and Lennie's American Dream may have been out of their reach, but once Candy came along things seemed to work out for a little. And Curley's wife's American Dream would have came true if she just kept working on it, instead of just giving up.
